Clearfield, Utah History
Initially home to the Paiute, Ute, and Shoshone tribes, Clearfield was known as the land of wind and sand before it was settled by the first white man. The arrival of the railroad in 1869 led to people forming a community here that they called Sand Ridge, before its name was changed to Clearfield. It was one of the last communities in northern Davis County to be settled, with its founding in 1877. Since there was no easily obtainable water until the Davis and Weber Counties Canal in 1884, it makes sense that it took a while for this area to become a settlement.
After the canal, the population boomed. Clearfield remained a rural farming town until the 1940’s, when Hill Air Force Base was built. This led to another population boom, and today, the Base continues to be one of the major job sources in the area. Today, Clearfield has a population of over 30,000 people with many job opportunities and high-quality, low-cost living.
