The resources of Davis County were used by prehistoric people as long as 11,000 years ago. Fremont groups lived here at least during a part of the year, and more recently, the Paiute, Ute, and Shoshone considered it neutral ground, each tribe using it for food and to pass through. In the 1800’s, Mormon pioneers started several agricultural settlements, and Davis County was defined by the State Of Deseret in 1850, which also designated the community of Farmington as the county seat, as it lay half-way between the county boundaries. Davis County was named after a captain in the Mormon Battalion, Daniel C. Davis. The county boundaries were altered over the decades to include part of the Great Salt Lake, and have remained relatively unchanged.
While initially, Davis County grew slowly, the Utah Central Rail Road brought progress and an increase in population with it in 1870, although the population remained small until the 1940’s. In the 1940’s, Hill Air Force Base was established, which caused population to double, and then double again. Now, it’s estimated that there are over 306,000 people living in Davis County, and it’s projected to continue to grow.
